An institution to redeem representation
In 2014, Council looked back on its first two years of existence, with a talk Grégory Castéra did in the frame of “Collectives ?”, a seminar by Images re-vues. The talk was introduced with the following text.
At the end of 2012, while we were directors of two institutions (the Kadist Art Foundation for Sandra Terdjman and Les Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers for me), we decided to embark on the creation of a new structure, now called the Council. The starting point, even if we did not call it that, was to redeem the notion of “representation”, criticized by artistic practices of recent decades. Today we present Council as an artistic organization dedicated to composing with different forms of knowledge, between the arts, sciences and other disciplines, in order to offer new representations of societal problems. A multidisciplinary, collective and multimodal composition of knowledge is the tool we use to try and bring together the artistic and political dimensions of representation. In this talk, I will consider the two years of development of the structure.
