Mission

Council is an art organization devoted to fostering better understanding of societal issues. It was founded with the conviction that art produces meaningful social change and that its influence can be extended to other domains.

Council develops a long-term artistic program by partnering with thinkers and makers from different fields of action and expertise. Council commissions artworks, curates exhibitions, designs assemblies, and orchestrates educational programs. Additionally, the fellowship AFIELD recognizes artists and cultural practitioners who develop social initiatives that benefit communities within and beyond the field of arts. Council’s program addresses issues related to health and care, gender equality, ecology, collective practices and social innovation. Through these activities, Council builds trans-local networks of creative and civically minded communities.

Council was founded and registered as a nonprofit organization in France in 2013 by Grégory Castéra and Sandra Terdjman and is composed today of a team of 8. It is financially supported by foundations and cultural institutions. The offices are located in Paris, and activities take place internationally.

Clues

Our research method has been described in the text 4 Movements of the curatorial inquiry (in Curating Context: Beyond the Gallery and into Other Fields Art and Theory Publishing and Statens konstråd, 2017).

The concept of network is explored in the text Composing the Near and the Far (Occasional Groundwork, 2021)

The name Council literally stands for the situations we are designing: physical or virtual forums where people concerned with a matter come together.

Council is registered as a non-profit organisation in France (association loi 1901). Its business model relies mainly on the support of private foundations positioned between traditions of artistic and social philanthropy.
